Examples of Newsletters
and Newsletter Formats
Excellent use of full color; clever graphics; and great newsletter name By a plant science center
It's very unusual to see a newsletter produced by a science or technology group that employs a playful newsletter name, but that is exactly what see here with The Leaflet, a clever newsletter name for the organization. You'll find that the more technical a newsletter is the more likely it is to be named NEWS (GROUPNAME NEWS) or NEWSLETTER, which seems a triumph of redudancy. In any case, The Leaflet uses lovely stem graphics for its headlines throughout that add a nice graphic consistency to the letter. Consistency is one of the most important qualities of good newsletter design. Establish your graphic standards and then use them throughout. You'll notice the newsletter uses an offbeat 3-column design. On page 1, there are two columns of type and one column for art. On pages 3 and 4, you'll see variations of the three column layout, using double columns of type. It takes a good designer to do this effectively. If a column is too wide, readers can't scan down the line and then pick up the line below it. Also not the pretty use of white space on page 4.

Nice use of full color in a customer newsletter
By a food manufacturer
One could argue that, if full color could only be used in a few places, food sales would certainly be one of them. This customer newsletter by a major food company uses lively colors to complement full color photographs of its packaging. Inside it features some important articles about the steps it is taking to ensure food safety, no doubt of deep interest to the company's customers. Observe that on pages 2 and 3, the company gives nice size headlines to its food safety articles. To make the sea of gray easier to read, the designer has added a good bit of leading (space between the lines).
